Canon has been powering its IXUS digital range for over 15 years (called ELPH in North America, and while each version has gotten a bit thinner and more refined, elegant point-and-shoot cameras that will easily slide have essentially been kept in a pocket and won’t break the bank. What we get here with the Canon IXUS 185 / Elph 180 is very much a beginner model, offering 20MP from a relatively small 1 / 2.3in sensor. Zoom offers a respectable range 8x optical, starting from a usefully wide setting equivalent to 24mm, although light sensitivity ranges from just ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with the camera limiting to a maximum of ISO 800 when left in automatic setup. Program mode implemented, the operation is still reduced although there are some creative digital filter options available to anyone who chooses to drill down through the menus. Hence, there are no spec awards, but for this kind of money, the Canon IXUS 185 does pretty much everything you’d expect. ap and simple is what you want, this is the best point-and-shoot camera right here!
